Mental Illness, Alcoholism, Addiction

The drug alcohol is a depressant, widely used and socially acceptable. Alcohol slows down the receptors that connect the body and the brain, causing a euphoric feeling and a numbness throughout the body. A person who uses alcohol excessively and with the intention to numb out and disappear may have signs of early alcoholism, or at the least alcohol abuse. People who experience memory loss while drinking, also known as ‘blackouts’ are suffering from alcoholism.

Signs of alcoholism also include problems with daily living: attending to the home, work, family, and other personal relationships, as well as trying to hide excessive use or drinking uncontrollably even when it is not desirable. Alcoholism a progressive disease and without treatment can lead to incarceration and many other severe consequences, including death.
